Vincent's Vault o' Vacuity

Here’s a quick and easy article explaining how to detect and remove the MacDefender malware that everyone is making a big deal over. More important than how to remove the malware is simply how to avoid getting it in the first place:

  1. Remember that there are currently no real Mac worms or viruses, this current malware threat requires you to actively install it.
  2. Only install software from reputable sources, such as Apple’s Mac App Store, MacUpdate, or Download.com
  3. Do not enter your administrator password to approve a software installation unless you know exactly what you are installing and where it came from.
  4. That said, consider running an antivirus utility from a reputable vendor, such as Sophos. Although there are no known Mac viruses or worms today, that doesn’t mean there won’t be tomorrow. Sophos has a free version for non-commercial use.
